Netanyahu gives new conditions for Israel ceasefire in Gaza

Israel via its Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has set a condition for agreeing to a ceasefire in the ongoing conflict with Hamas, stating that it will not entertain any agreement until hostages held in Gaza are released.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu made this announcement on Sunday, emphasizing that Israel would stand firm on its stance even as talks for a ceasefire are scheduled to resume in Egypt amid the protracted conflict.

Speaking at the outset of a weekly cabinet meeting, Netanyahu reiterated Israel’s refusal to acquiesce to what he termed as “extreme” demands from Hamas, the militant group governing Gaza.

The conflict, which has entered its seventh month, was sparked by Hamas’ deadly attack on southern Israel on October 7.

Netanyahu’s remarks underscore the steadfastness of Israel’s position amidst growing international pressure for a resolution to the conflict.

The demand for the release of hostages held by Hamas serves as a crucial precondition for Israel’s consent to a ceasefire, indicating the gravity of the issue in the ongoing negotiations.
