In a recent interview with Olawale Adebimpe, the current Lead Product Manager at SabiPay, he detailed his journey into product management, highlighting how his early experiences fueled his passion for shaping products from concept to launch. Olawale emphasized his commitment to aligning product development with strategic organizational goals and adapting to evolving market trends through continuous research and user feedback.

Olawale also shared insights on maintaining a work-life balance during high-pressure projects, stressing the importance of setting boundaries and prioritizing personal time. He offered practical advice for newcomers to the field, advocating for the development of strong communication and problem-solving skills, gaining hands-on experience, and seeking mentorship to enhance their product management capabilities.

Interviewer: How did you get started in product management, and what motivated you to pursue this career path?

Olawale: My journey into product management started with a deep curiosity about how products are built and brought to market. Early in my career, I was involved in a project where I saw the impact a well-managed product could have on both the business and the end users. The ability to shape something from concept to launch excited me and I knew I wanted to be part of that process. What motivated me was the challenge of balancing business goals with customer needs and the thrill of creating something that people genuinely find valuable.

Interviewer: Product management is a complex and dynamic field. As a Lead Product Manager, how do you ensure that the products you develop align with the strategic goals of your organisation?

Olawale: Great question! For me, it all starts with understanding the big picture. I spend a lot of time with leadership to really grasp the company’s strategic vision. Once I have that, I make sure every product decision I make aligns with those goals. It’s about connecting the dots between the day-to-day tasks and the long-term vision. And, of course, I keep those lines of communication open with both the executive team and my development teams to ensure we’re all moving in the same direction.

Interviewer: The market is constantly evolving, and customer needs change rapidly. How do you stay ahead of these changes and ensure that your product roadmap remains relevant?

Olawale: You know, staying ahead in this fast-paced environment is challenging but also exciting. I rely heavily on continuous market research and customer feedback. I make it a point to stay close to our users—whether it’s through surveys, user interviews, or even just analysing usage data. I also keep an eye on industry trends and competitors. This constant flow of information helps me adjust the product roadmap as needed, ensuring we’re always addressing current and future customer needs.

Interviewer: How do you balance your work life and personal life, especially during high-pressure projects?

Olawale: Balancing work and personal life can be challenging, especially when you’re in the middle of a high-pressure project. For me, it’s about setting boundaries and prioritising my time effectively. I make sure to schedule personal time, whether it’s spending time with family, exercising, or simply unwinding. During intense work periods, I try to be very disciplined with my schedule, focusing on productivity rather than just putting in long hours. I also believe in the importance of taking short breaks during the day to recharge. It’s easy to get caught up in work, but I’ve found that maintaining a healthy balance actually makes me more effective in my role because it prevents burnout and keeps me energised.

Interviewer: What advice would you give to someone new to product management or looking to break into the field?

Olawale: My advice to aspiring product managers is to start by honing your communication and problem-solving skills—these are critical in this role. Understanding Agile and Scrum methodologies is important, but what matters is how you apply them in real-world situations. I’d suggest seeking out opportunities to manage smaller projects or lead initiatives, even if they’re not directly related to product management. This hands-on experience will build your confidence and competence. Don’t underestimate the value of mentorship; learn from seasoned product managers and don’t be afraid to ask questions. And most importantly, always keep the end-user in focus. Successful product management is about delivering value, so make sure your efforts are aligned with the strategic goals of your organisation.
