Nationwide Protest: "There'll be nothing in Urhobo land" -- UPU

The Urhobo Progress Union (UPU) Youth Wing, Worldwide, has officially distanced itself from the looming nationwide protest against economic hardship.

The organization, under the leadership of National President Activist Blessed Ughere, released a communiqué on Wednesday emphasizing that protests in solidarity with the nationwide protest movement would be counterproductive given the current security challenges in Delta Central and other parts of Delta State.

“Engaging in protests now would be counterproductive,” the communiqué declared, urging all Urhobo sons, daughters, and residents to boycott the proposed demonstrations. The statement highlighted the risks of exacerbating existing security issues and providing opportunities for criminal elements to exploit the situation.

The UPU Youth Wing is actively engaged in discussions with the Delta State Government, advocating for permanent military checkpoints in key areas to address security concerns. They advised all citizens to remain cautious and vigilant, particularly in high-risk areas such as Egbo, along the Agbarho-Ughelli Road, and the Ughelli-Patani Highway.

The call to action is clear:

“We categorically state that we will not support any form of protest across Urhoboland in Delta State by any group or individuals,” the communiqué stressed.

It also urged leaders and stakeholders to collaborate with security agencies to ensure law and order, which are deemed essential for the region’s prosperity and peace.
