NANS calls for increase in student loan amid fuel price hike
The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has called for an increase in student loans from N20,000 to N40,000 to help students cope with the rising cost of living due to the recent hike in fuel prices.
NANS Senate President, Babatunde Akinteye, made this appeal during a press conference on Monday in Abuja.
Akinteye emphasized the need for this adjustment to ensure that students can continue their education without undue financial strain. He also urged the Federal Government to reduce excessive government spending, stating that it is only fair for those in power to lead by example during such challenging times.
“We are at a critical moment in our nation’s history, where economic reforms have brought discomfort, hunger, and despair,” Akinteye said.
He called for unity and measured action instead of protests, stressing the importance of preserving life and avoiding hasty reactions.
Addressing the current hardships, including foreign exchange issues, fuel scarcity, and rising food prices, Akinteye urged the government to tackle these problems head-on. He acknowledged the distress felt by Nigerians, especially students, due to high fuel prices, but cautioned against reacting in anger.
“The safety of every Nigerian student is our top priority, and we will not hastily call for protests that could endanger their lives,” he added.
Akinteye also called for calm, expressing confidence that the reforms initiated by President Bola Tinubu would eventually yield positive outcomes.
