MTN warns of service failure over insecurity in Nigeria

South Africa-based multinational mobile telecoms company, MTN has warned that its service in Nigeria could be affected due to increasing insecurity across the country.

MTN wrote in a message to customers seen by Top Naija saying, “Sadly, we must inform you that with the rising insecurity in different parts of Nigeria, service delivery to your organization may be impacted in the coming days.

“This means that in some cases, our technical support team may not be able to get to your site and achieve optimum turnaround time in fault management as quickly as possible.”

MTN Group Limited, formerly M-Cell, is a South African multinational mobile telecoms company, operating majorly in African countries including Nigeria.

Its head office is in Johannesburg. As of September 2020, MTN recorded 273.44 million subscribers, making it the ninth largest mobile network operator in the world, and the largest in Africa.

The South African network provider is active in over 20 countries, one-third of company revenue come from Nigeria, where it holds about 35% market share.

The World Bank stated that growth in Nigeria resumed in fourth quarter after COVID-19 pandemic, which induced recession, but it lags the rest of sub-Saharan Africa, with food inflation, intensified insecurity and delayed reforms decelerating the economy and increasing poverty.
