Mother and son sentenced to 7 years imprisonment for false information on sports betting
A mother and her son have been sentenced to seven years in prison by the Kaduna State High Court for providing false information on sports betting to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Oluwayemisi Samuel and her son, Joshua Samuel, had allegedly squandered N5.6 million on sports betting and then filed a petition with the EFCC, falsely alleging that the money had been fraudulently withdrawn from their Opay account to a sports betting account by an unknown individual without their permission.
The EFCC investigated the matter and discovered that the petition was false.
The duo later pleaded guilty to the charges of providing false information.
Prosecution counsel N. Salele urged the court to convict them accordingly.
In his ruling, Justice A.A Bello found the defendants guilty and sentenced them to seven years imprisonment each with an option of paying a fine of N150,000.
The EFCC has been cracking down on fraudulent activities in the country, especially those related to sports betting and online scams.
