Morocco makes Africa proud again on the Women's stage

Morocco did it at the 2023 Men’s World Cup, and like deja vu, have repeated the feat at the 2023 Women’s World Cup to secure a place in the knockout stages after seeing off Germany and South Korea in Group H.

The triumph follows a 1-0 win versus Colombia Women in a tight fixture that sees Anissa Lahmari give the North African team the lead after a penalty miss by Ghizlane Chebbak shortly before the half time whistle.

Qualification into the Round of 16 comes on the back of a previous win against South Korea women in the second group stage fixture of Group H.

Prior to the consecutive 1-0 ties, Morocco faced potential elimination after a disastrous 6-0 rout on them by the Germany women’s team. However, football gives the world a shocker as Germany crashes out of the tournament from the group stages despite a 6-0 win on opening day.

Morocco becomes the third African team to secure a place in the round of 16 after the likes of Nigeria and South Africa for the first time in Women’s World Cup history.

When it comes to the history, the Morocco men’s and women’s team have both placed themselves in the history books for Africa in the space of 8 months.

Germany’s elimination from the group comes after a 2-1 defeat to Colombia Women and a 1-1 draw versus South Korea in the latter group games, and Korea’s elimination coming on the back of a 1-1 draw with Germany, a 1-0 defeat to Morocco and a 2-0 defeat to Colombia.
This sees South Korea finish bottom of Group H.
