The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has issued a plea to organized labour, urging them to reconsider proceeding with a nationwide strike over the failed agreement on a new minimum wage.

In a statement by the Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, concerns were raised about the potential ramifications of the strike, including heightened tension and political instability across Nigeria.

Adejobi emphasized the importance of maintaining peace and stability in the country, particularly during economic and social challenges.

He urged the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) to return to the negotiation table with the Federal Government to find an amicable solution to the ongoing dispute over the minimum wage.

The organized labour unions have been advocating for a significant increase in the minimum wage, proposing N494,000, while the government has maintained its stance on a minimum wage of N60,000.

This disparity in figures has led to a call for an indefinite strike by the organised labour union.

“In light of the Federal Government’s recent declaration that the planned strike is illegal and premature, the Nigeria Police Force views this action as a potential catalyst for increased tension and political instability,” Adejobi stated in the release.

He further emphasized the need for organized labour to prioritize dialogue and engagement with the relevant stakeholders, rather than resorting to industrial action. Adejobi highlighted the ongoing deliberations at the Tripartite Committee as a crucial platform for finding a mutually acceptable resolution to the wage dispute.

“The Nigeria Police Force assures the public that ample deployments have been made across the country to ensure that citizens can go about their lawful duties without hindrance,” Adejobi reassured.

“Therefore, all members of the public are encouraged to remain calm and continue with their lawful daily activities, while organized labour is urged to act responsibly and in accordance with the law, prioritizing dialogue and legal avenues to resolving the existing grievances.”
