President Tinubu seeks more time for minimum wage decision

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced that he requires more time to consult widely on the appropriate new minimum wage for public sector workers.

This explanation was given during the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting on Tuesday when the matter was presented for deliberation.

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, revealed this during a briefing with State House Correspondents. He explained that the memo on the new minimum wage was postponed because the Federal Government wants to consult with various stakeholders, as the new wage proposals impact local governments, states, and the Federal Government.

“A lot of people have been asking me questions about whether the New Minimum Wage would come up for deliberation today at FEC, and whether the government was going to have a position on it,” said Idris. He noted that the tripartite committee, which includes the Nigeria Labour Congress, Trade Union Congress, Organized Private Sector, and government representatives, had submitted a report on the new minimum wage to the President.

“FEC deliberated on the new national minimum wage because it is not solely the decision of the Federal Government,” Idris added. “The memo was stepped down to enable Mr. President to consult further and make an informed decision. This is necessary as the decision affects the States, LGAs, and the Federal Government.”
