It was merely an international friendly but Mexico head coach, Gerardo Martino had a lot to be happy for as his team prepares for the World Cup tournament in Qatar.

Though having a few criticisms on his team, he commended his players for the performance in nicking a win over Nigeria’s Super Eagles.

The hard fought 2-1 victory over Nigeria at the AT &T Stadium on Sunday was one of the fixtures that kick started Mexico’s preparations, and the game started with Santiago Gimenez putting the Mexicans ahead in the 13th minute after being left alone with Goal Keeper Francis Uzoho.

The Super Eagles left it until the 54th minute to net an equalizer through Cyril Dessers but immediately fell short in the 56th minute with a William Troost Ekong own goal.

“The game plan has always been reflected, but we lacked continuity. Today we associated — we are getting back things we had lost,” the Mexico coach said after the game. It doesn’t matter who plays, we will not change our game plan. Today, we played the ones with the longest time with us this camp.” The Coach said.

“We see great potential with Santi [Giménez], and we value him a lot. I understand he is linked to our future, but we want him in our present, and we are happy with his performance with the National Team,” he concluded.
