Medical doctor convicted for failed plastic surgery
The Federal High Court in Lagos State has convicted and sentenced Dr. Anuoluwapo Adepoju, a medical doctor and founder of MedContour Services, for her role in a failed plastic surgery that led to the death of Nneka Onwuzuligbo in 2020. Justice Mohammed Liman found Dr. Adepoju guilty and imposed a one-year jail term.
However, she was given the option to pay a ₦100,000 fine in lieu of serving the prison sentence for the failed plastic surgery.
Babatunde Irukera, former Director-General of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC), reacted to the judgment with a sense of pride. In a post on his X handle, he expressed satisfaction with the outcome of the case, which he had personally prosecuted.
“Today is a day of pride for me that I personally prosecuted Anu Adepoju and her medical practice,” Irukera wrote. “Though I’ve left, the case has ended in a conviction, strengthening the accountability framework for all in society, professionals or otherwise. This is how society should work and grow.”
Irukera highlighted that both Dr. Adepoju and her medical practice were convicted on all five counts charged by the FCCPC, emphasizing the importance of seeing the justice process through, despite its slow pace.
“The wheel of justice may grind slowly, but we must see it through. Good day for consumers of professional services,” he added.
