Mauricio Pochettino to Chelsea creates domino effect for Liverpool

Former Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino is reportedly emerging as the favorite to take over the vacant managerial position at Chelsea.

The Argentinian coach has held positive talks with Chelsea’s owners, which could result in confirmation of him becoming the permanent successor to Graham Potter. Pochettino has been out of work since being sacked by Paris Saint-Germain in July, and his appointment to Stamford Bridge could lead to a transfer speculation around his former Tottenham players.

The most notable of these players is striker Harry Kane, who is expected to leave Spurs in the summer window. Should Pochettino be appointed, it could also have a knock-on effect for other clubs in the Premier League, including Liverpool.

The Argentinian coach is reportedly keen to back plans for a clear-out of Chelsea’s bloated 31-man squad before the start of pre-season.

This could be beneficial to Liverpool, who have been linked with several Chelsea players. Liverpool’s interest in Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount is no secret, with the Reds keen to sign the player whose contract runs until 2024.

Liverpool has also shown interest in Chelsea midfielder Mateo Kovacic, who is out of contract in 2024 and could be available for a cheaper price. Conor Gallagher is another Chelsea midfielder that Liverpool is reportedly interested in.

Gallagher is under contract with Chelsea until 2025 and could be a cheaper option than Mount. Liverpool is reportedly set to meet with Kovacic’s representatives, with Manchester United and Manchester City also planning to hold talks.

The arrival of Pochettino could prove to be beneficial for Liverpool in transfer negotiations for the three players, coupled with Chelsea’s need to comply with Financial Fair Play rules after a huge spending spree under co-owner Todd Boehly. However, it remains to be seen whether Chelsea would be willing to sell one or more of the trio, especially to a direct rival.
