Protesters in Tel Aviv blocked a major highway and lit bonfires, while police clashed with demonstrators outside Netanyahu’s private home in Jerusalem.

The crisis has drawn concern from the United States and other close allies. Netanyahu had been expected to halt the legislation, but has reportedly postponed his public statement on the matter following pressure from a coalition ally.

The head of Israel’s largest trade union group has announced plans to launch a general strike, which could paralyse large parts of the country’s economy.
