Mason Mount is the reason I joined Chelsea — Ben Chilwell

After convincing Leicester City defender, Ben Chilwell into joining Chelsea a few summers ago, Mason Mount betrays the Chelsea left back by exiting the club for premier league rival, Manchester United.

The move, which saw the England midfielder join the ranks of the Red Devils, left Ben Chilwell with quite the bitter pill to swallow considering according to the England international, Mount played a key role in convincing Chilwell to join the Blues.

Known for their close camaraderie both on and off the pitch, Ben Chilwell referred to Mount as one of his “closest friends” on the team.

The pair had spent considerable time together at the training ground and during their downtime, creating a bond that made Mason’s departure all the more poignant for the left-back.

In an interview with Football London, Chilwell opens up about the transfer and the personal impact of losing a valued teammate to a rival club.

On a personal level, the former Leicester City man revealed it was quite challenging to bid farewell to someone he considered one of his “best mates.”

“Of course it’s sad for me personally to see him leave,” the defender was quoted saying.

Speaking to Football London, Ben Chilwell said this about Mason Mount’s exit from the Chelsea squad;

“On a personal level, you are going to miss one of your best mates that you spent a lot of time with at the training ground and away from the training ground.

“I think I said it on my Instagram when he left, he was one of the reasons why I joined the club, so of course it’s sad for me personally to see him leave.

“I just wish him the best, and I am sure in his head he has made the right decision.

“I am happy for him and hopefully he can go there and do well.”
