Martin Zubimendi shuts the door on Liverpool

It is starting to look like a nightmare of a transfer window for Liverpool and Arne Slot as summer target Martin Zubimendi has turned down a move to Merseyside.

The Real Sociedad midfielder a few days back was reported by sports journalists; David Ornstein and Fabrizio Romano as being under the radar of the Reds with Liverpool said to have been fast tracking his transfer. However, in a shock U-turn, the Spaniard has left the premier league side in a bubble as he has formally turned down Liverpool.

According to the reports, Sociedad were able to persuade Martin Zubimendi to stay, with the Spain international said to have had a last minute change of mind.

From Romano’s account, Zubimendi confirmed this to Liverpool’s sporting direction, Richard Hughes, leaving the Refs chasing for another target before the transfer window closes.

Martin Zubimendi caught eyes in his cameo in the Euro 2024 final versus England, coming on for Manchester City’s Rodri after the latter picked up an injury.

Zubimendi joins a list of players who have rejected a move to Merseyside in back to back summer windows.

This undoubtedly leaves a sour taste in Liverpool’s recipe for the season, with its fan base taking to Twitter to air their frustrations with the club.

So far, Liverpool remains the only top 6 premier league club without a summer signing.

It will be interesting to see who the Reds recruit into their ranks after losing Martin Zubimendi who currently stands to sign a new deal with Real Sociedad. The move would have seen Sociedad earn £51 million had Liverpool triggered his release clause.
