Marcus Rashford Should Be Manchester United Captain — Danny Murphy

Marcus Rashford Should Be Manchester United Captain -- Danny Murphy

Former Liverpool star and football pundit, Danny Murphy, has stated that Manchester United forward, Marcus Rashford, would be an ideal candidate for the club’s captaincy. In his column for the Daily Mail, Murphy suggested that Rashford’s performances on and off the pitch make him a strong contender for the role.

Marcus Rashford, 25, has been in fine form since returning from the FIFA 2022 World Cup in Qatar, scoring 14 Premier League goals for Manchester United this season. He has also netted five Europa League and Carabao Cup goals, as well as a single FA Cup goal and provided nine assists in all competitions.

Murphy believes that Rashford’s confidence in front of the microphone and camera, coupled with his growing status as an elite forward, makes him an excellent communicator on behalf of the club.

However, Murphy also acknowledges that Marcus Rashford is unlikely to be handed the armband without a fight.

Currently, there are calls for Bruno Fernandes to be stripped of the captaincy and with Harry Maguire rarely starting for Manchester United, Rashford has been touted as a possible candidate to lead the team. However, Ten Hag, the team’s manager, has already dismissed the idea of stripping Fernandes of the captain’s armband.

Ten Hag believes that Fernandes is having a brilliant season and is a vital energy-giver to the team. He is also pointing and coaching players in the right direction, which is why he is an essential figure in the team.

Murphy acknowledges that Ten Hag will do what is best for the club and has already shown himself to be an excellent man-manager. Therefore, it remains to be seen who will be given the captaincy in the long-term.

Murphy concludes by saying that the best-case scenario for Ten Hag would be for Rashford to commit his long-term future to Manchester United and eventually become their new captain.

It seems unlikely that Fernandes will be stripped of the captaincy anytime soon, and Rashford will have to wait for his opportunity to lead the team out at Old Trafford.
