Marcus Rashford rubbishes contract claims
Manchester United striker Marcus Rashford has dismissed reports claiming that he is seeking a new deal worth over £500,000 per week to remain at Old Trafford.
Marcus Rashford, whose current contract with the Red Devils expires in 2024, took to Twitter to deny the claim, stating that he and the club have been respectful to one another during the negotiations.
The 25-year-old forward, who has scored 27 goals in all competitions this season, is reportedly assessing his options before signing the biggest deal of his career.
According to The Athletic, Rashford rejected a contract offer worth over £400,000 per week from Paris Saint-Germain last summer to stay with United. However, the French champions are believed to be interested in the England international and could return with a fresh approach this summer.
Rashford’s contract negotiations have been further complicated by the potential sale of United. British billionaire Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Qatari banker Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani have both submitted bids to buy the club from the Glazer family, while Finnish entrepreneur Thomas Zilliacus has also launched a campaign to buy the club.
The Sun claims that Rashford may wait to see what happens around the ownership of the club before making a final decision on his future. It has also been suggested that United may have to break an unwritten wage cap rule of around £200,000 per week per player to keep Rashford at the club.
This move, dubbed the ‘Cristiano Ronaldo rule,’ was implemented to prevent jealousy in the squad, but it could be scrapped if the club’s ownership changes. Rashford is said to be waiting to see what new owners, such as the Qataris, may be able to offer him.
Marcus Rashford is one of the key players in Erik ten Hag’s squad, and United is keen to keep him for the long term. Despite the ongoing negotiations, Rashford’s focus remains on finishing the season strongly and winning trophies.
