Marcos Rojo on why Harry Maguire kept playing every week

Former Manchester United defender Marcos Rojo has made scathing comments about his former teammate, current United captain Harry Maguire. Rojo, who currently captains Boca Juniors in Argentina, played for United for seven years, making 122 appearances. However, his game-time was reduced in the 2019/20 season, and he started only once in the Premier League.

Maguire was brought in as first-choice center-back after a club-record £80 million transfer from Leicester City, eventually becoming United’s captain after Ashley Young’s departure to Inter Milan. Rojo was not pleased with his lack of game-time, especially when Maguire was making mistakes every week, according to Rojo.

In an interview with TyC Sports, Rojo claimed that he confronted United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer about the situation, saying: “One day I went to Solskjaer’s office to tell him to let me leave for the other club or put [me] in the starting line-up, but he told me that Maguire had to play because of the money they paid for him.”

Rojo also accused Harry Maguire of making huge mistakes and said, “Son of a b***h let me play because this guy is making huge mistakes every week.” The former United defender claimed that Maguire’s selection was due to the money the club had spent on him, rather than his actual performance on the pitch.

Harry Maguire has struggled to find consistent form this season and made a significant error in United’s Europa League exit to Sevilla. He was suspended for the FA Cup semi-final win over Brighton and missed the 2-2 draw with Tottenham due to injury.

Rojo’s comments are likely to add further scrutiny to Maguire’s performances, as United fans may now question whether the defender deserves to be in the starting lineup.
