Manchester United identify another €100 million player for January

Manchester United are reportedly ready to fortify their quest to bring in more reinforcement as the season continues to gain traction, with reports suggesting a focus on defensive reinforcements. Amid their struggles in the Premier League, where they’ve scored just 16 goals in 13 games, attention has turned to shoring up their backline.

Manager Erik ten Hag’s priority for the summer transfer window appears to be defensive stability, a pressing concern exacerbated by injuries and performance issues. The setback due to Lisandro Martinez’s long-term injury led to Harry Maguire’s resurgence, making a significant comeback at Old Trafford. Additionally, the unexpected prominence of 35-year-old Jonny Evans, who signed a one-year deal in September, has seen him preferred over Raphael Varane.

Sky Sports Germany reports Manchester United’s primary target is Benfica’s 20-year-old centre-back, Antonio Silva, who boasts a hefty €100m (£86.7m) release clause in his contract. Despite having three years left on his current deal, there’s a growing belief within Silva’s current club that he might depart next summer. Impressively, Silva has already accumulated 61 appearances for Benfica and secured seven caps for Portugal, indicating United’s faith in his potential.

In their pursuit of defensive talent, United are also eyeing another Portuguese prospect, Goncalo Inacio. The 22-year-old Sporting Lisbon defender recently extended his contract but has a more affordable release clause of £42.9 million. However, United might face stiff competition from rivals Liverpool, who have also shown interest in Inacio.

The anticipation mounts as Manchester United looks to secure defensive reinforcements ahead of the transfer window, with these Portuguese talents emerging as top considerations for the Red Devils’ backline revamp.
