Manchester United hit hard yet again as Onana falls
The season continues to get ever bleak for Manchester United on the injury front as Marcus Rashford and Andre Onana have both picked up injuries while on international duties for their respective countries.
This adds to the club’s mounting list of sidelined players.
The latest blows come in the wake of Christian Eriksen and Rasmus Hojlund withdrawing from Denmark’s squad due to injury concerns ahead of Euro 2024 qualifiers against Slovenia and Northern Ireland.
Eriksen faces a month-long absence due to a knee injury, while Hojlund has picked up a muscle strain.
These injuries compound the troubles for manager Erik ten Hag and the medical staff, already contending with the absence of Lisandro Martinez, Luke Shaw, Casemiro, Tyrell Malacia, Jonny Evans, and the recent absence of Aaron Wan-Bissaka from their Premier League victory against Luton.
The latest casualties include Rashford, who limped off the field during England’s win over Malta at Wembley after the hour mark, and goalkeeper Onana, who was replaced in the 81st minute of Cameroon’s World Cup qualifier against Mauritius by Fabrice Ondoa.
The setback for Onana, who rejoined the Cameroon squad after a suspension stemming from last winter’s World Cup, comes ahead of next year’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
The tournament, running from January 13th to February 11th, could see the 27-year-old miss up to six games for Manchester United, notably crucial Premier League clashes against Spurs, Wolves, West Ham, and Aston Villa.
An early call-up for Onana to join Cameroon’s pre-tournament camp might also see him absent for United’s FA Cup third-round tie scheduled for January 6-7.
Additionally, progression to the Champions League last-16 stage would potentially have Manchester United playing the first leg just 48 hours after the AFCON final, further complicating matters for the club.
