Manchester City plots move to weaken Champions League rivals

Fresh off their historic 2022/23 campaign, where they clinched the Treble and secured their maiden Champions League title, Manchester City is reportedly plotting an audacious double transfer move that could significantly impact one of their European rivals.

Despite a relatively quiet January transfer window at the Etihad Stadium, with Kalvin Phillips’ loan move to West Ham being the only major business, Manchester City is said to be gearing up for a blockbuster summer.

According to reports from The Athletic, the Premier League champions are eyeing moves for Bayern Munich’s Joshua Kimmich and Jamal Musiala.

City’s admiration for Kimmich is well-documented, with manager Pep Guardiola having worked with the German midfielder during his tenure at Bayern.

Although a January move for Kimmich was downplayed by Manchester City sources, The Athletic suggests that a summer transfer is now on the agenda.

Kimmich himself has expressed interest in reuniting with Guardiola, particularly when the Catalan coach was linked with a return to Bayern during the 2019/20 season.

While Guardiola typically avoids poaching players from his former clubs, the report speculates that a move could materialize if Kimmich signals his desire to leave Bayern.

City’s interest doesn’t stop at Kimmich, as they are also considering a move for 20-year-old attacking midfielder Jamal Musiala. The young talent, whose contract with Bayern expires in 2026, is yet to commit to an extension.

However, The Athletic notes that City’s director of football Txiki Begiristain and Guardiola are currently prioritizing other positions for strengthening.

Kimmich’s versatility, capable of playing both at right-back and in holding midfield, adds to his appeal, especially with his current contract set to expire next season.
