Manchester City elects new Captain

Manchester City want a new start to the Premier League season, and what better way to set the new season apart from the rest than by starting it off with a new Captain?

The Etihad side as per UK Telegraph have appointed German international, Ilkay Gundogan as new captain with Kevin De Bruyne serving as the Vice Captain for the Cityzens.

The appointment comes after the departure of Fernandinho from the Manchester City side after spending about 9 years and seasons at Manchester to leave for a free to Atletico Paranaense.

Ilkay Gundogan wore the armband at several intervals last season with the absence of Fernandinho in the squad and recently did so this season in the 4-0 win over Bournemouth last Saturday.

The club chooses to make the captaincy official going into the 2022/23 season as Manchester City look to build on a title winning season as they stay top of the Premier League table.

Gundogan was one of the first players Pep Guardiola brought to City and was originally linked with a move away this summer.

However, the German is now the club’s official captain, with Kevin De Bruyne as Vice Captain, with Rodri joining the club’s leadership group hierarchy.

The five man leadership group also includes defenders Kyle Walker and Ruben Dias.
