Would you ever give back money that mistakenly found its way into your bank account that didn’t involve you committing any crime to have it in there? Especially if the money is a life changing figure that could tweak your life?

Well, a 43-year old man, Ndiong George Bassey, has the answer as he chooses to refuse a refund of N50m that somehow was paid into his bank account 4 years ago.

In Bassey’s defense, the money wasn’t gotten from a crime he committed but an act of God which was a response to his prayers, having served the company, Promasidox Nigeria Ltd; who made the mistake, for several years meritoriously before he resigned.

The company, Promasidor Nigeria Limited located at Cowbell Way, Isolo Industrial Estate, Ilasamaja area of Lagos, had made the mistake of transferring money meant for National Union of Beverages and Tobacco Employees (NUBTE) to Bassey’s account.

Bassey who had been praying for a financial breakthrough to start his own independent business, came upon the money while at the altar of prayer. The figure promptly forced him into resignation as he felt his prayers answered.

When the company realized that they paid the money into Bassey’s account, they had the case reported to the Police, with the police tracking Bassey and ultimately catching up with him. They had the man arrested and brought for interrogation.

In the course of interrogation, Bassey was asked by the Police to refund the money but promptly refused, informing the Police he had spent the money seeing as he felt his prayers answered the minute he received it and how no one showed up to claim it in the years the money was on him.

After the interrogations, the Police had Bassey charged for crime based on his accounts of the story.

Bassey still pleads not guilty to the offence even with the charges against him, and has been remanded into prison pending bail being granted, with a trial date fixed at 31st May, 2022.

The Presiding Magistrate, Mrs. O. Kasumu, granted bail at a fixed fee of N1m with two sureties in similar amount.
