Somadina Orji,

The local police have confirmed the arrest of a young man named Somadina Orji, who is accused of a horrendous crime – the murder of his own mother, Mrs. Charity Orji, and his sister, Miss Ukamaka Orji.

This tragic event unfolded in the serene Umuagu Inyi area of the Oji River Local Government, sending shockwaves through the community.

Somadina, hailing from Igboariam in Anambra State, allegedly committed this act on Monday, December 4, 2023. The details that have emerged are deeply disturbing. Reports suggest that Mrs. Charity Orji, originally from Inyi but married in Igboariam, had been living in her family home with her children for several years. However, her relationship with her son Somadina had been strained due to his alleged involvement in hard drugs and his increasingly erratic behavior.

The conflict in the family escalated when Somadina reportedly had a serious altercation with his younger brother. A local community leader, Mr. Ben Obi, informed journalists that the mother intervened to protect her younger son, which led to her reporting Somadina to the community elders. This intervention by Mrs. Orji might have triggered the tragic outcome.

The situation took a darker turn when the younger sister, Ukamaka, went missing two weeks before the fatal incident with their mother. According to Ben Obi, Mrs. Orji had been away on a condolence visit and upon her return, she met her untimely death at the hands of her son, who then buried her in a shallow grave in their backyard.

The gruesome discovery was made when the younger brother, unable to find his mother, raised an alarm, leading to the villagers gathering at the compound. Under interrogation, Somadina shockingly confessed to killing both his mother and sister.

Upon the arrival of the police, the bodies of Mrs. Orji and Ukamaka were exhumed and taken to the mortuary, and Somadina was taken into custody. Mr. Ben Obi recalled Mrs. Orji as a hardworking woman who sold fufu to support her family.

This incident has brought to light the severe issue of drug abuse in the community. Ben highlighted the lack of effective community governance structures, such as a traditional ruler or town union, which could have played a role in monitoring and controlling the use of hard drugs. He appealed to the government for assistance to prevent such tragedies in the future.

Echoing these concerns, Mr. Ejike Tasie, the coordinating president-general in Oji River, condemned the incident and called on anti-drug agencies to address the alarming drug situation in the area.

DSP Daniel Ndukwe, the spokesperson for the Enugu State Police Command, confirmed the arrest of Somadina Orji to the press on Sunday. He assured that an investigation is underway and that the suspect will be arraigned in court once the investigation is concluded. This tragic event has left the community reeling, as they grapple with the loss and the disturbing circumstances surrounding it.
