A man identified as Muhammed Umar, has been arrested for allegedly absconding with his friend’s tricycle.

The 21-Year-Old claimed that poverty forced him to commit the alleged crime and pleaded for forgiveness.

According to further report, Muhammed obtained the tricycle, otherwise called Keke NAPEP, from his friend on condition that he would return it in 30 minutes, only to make away with it.

Muhammed hails from Shuwari in Old Maiduguri, Borno State but resides at Kasuwan Kuturu in Mubi, Adamawa.

He admitted running away with the tricycle after it was leased to him by his friend in Mubi last week.

He was arrested at nearby Mararaba Mubi.

He said he deceived his friend by telling him that a woman had requested him to take her to a particular place in Mubi for N2,000.

Muhammed said he had assured his friend that he would use the tricycle for 30 minutes, and that on his return, he would give him N1, 500, and use the remaining N500 to buy food for himself.

He confessed that he instead collected the tricycle and left town with no intention to return.

Muhammed pleaded for mercy, saying it was his first crime and that he did it due to worsening poverty, compounded by pressure from his even poorer parents.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Suleiman Nguroje, said the suspect will be charged to court for prosecution upon completion of investigation.

He asked the owner of the tricycle to claim it by reporting at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Command headquarters in Yola with evidence of ownership.
