Malaria Genomics Symposium by DELGEME and African Academy of Sciences.

The African Academy of Sciences and DELGEME are organizing a symposium on malaria genomics. DELGEME stands for Developing Excellence in Leadership and Genetics Training for Malaria Elimination in sub-Saharan Africa. It will help understand the use of genomics data for malaria elimination policy making. The symposium will occur during the 8th Genomic Epidemiology of Malaria (GEM) meeting. 

The GEM meeting started Monday, 7th of June, 2021 and will end Wednesday 9th. The virtual conference’s Scientific Organising Committee is made up of Caroline Buckee, Deus Ishengoma, Mara Lawniczak, and Dan Neafsey.

Speakers with genetic research perspective and National Malaria Control Programme (NMCP) perspective will be presenting their current activities. Malaria molecular surveillance is the subject of a presentation. Also, how NMCP uses it in decision making . The symposium happens at 10:30am to 12noon (UK time) on Tuesday June 8 2021.

Symposium talks include, “Malaria Molecular Surveillance use by NMPCs in Southern Africa: Current Status and Challenges” by Dr Jaishree Raman. Dr. Raman works at the National Institute for Communicable Diseases, Johannesburg, South Africa. Prof. Djimde Abdoulaye, who is president of Plasmodium Diversity Network Africa (PDNA), will talk on Engaging sub-Saharan Africa NMCPs on malaria genomics.
