The Nasarawa State Government says it will distribute 1.6 million Long Lasting Insecticidal Nets (LLINs) to all households as part of efforts to eliminate malaria.

Dr Ibrahim Adamu, Director of Public Health, Ministry of Health, made this known when he briefed newsmen in Lafia on Monday.

Adamu said that the distribution, which would hold between Feb. 23 and Feb. 27 across the state, was supported by the United States Government through the President’s Malaria Initiative (PMI)

According to him, the free nets will be distributed at 716 designated distribution points across the 13 local government areas.

“Our target is to ensure that one, out of every two persons in the state, has access to one bed net to sleep in and avert mosquito bite.”

He said that as part of effort to ensure adequate coverage, all households would be registered and given net cards that would be used to collect the LLIN during the distribution exercise.

He urged each household to keep the card safe as no one would be given the LLIN without the card.

Adamu advised that when collected, the nets must be aired in the shade for 24 hours before use, to ensure effectiveness.

He urged the media to enlighten members of the public and other stakeholders on the need to imbibe the culture of using the insecticidal net as the surest measure of combating the scourge of malaria.
