Major jailbreak averted in Edo state
On Thursday, officials of the Correctional Service, Police and Nigerian Army on Thursday foiled attempted jailbreak by inmates of the correctional centre located along Sapele road in Benin City, Edo State.
Some of the awaiting trial inmates, especially those recaptured, had resorted to protest in an attempt to escape but they were stopped by security agents.
The public relation officer Correctional Service in State, Aminu Suleman, confirmed the incident in a statement.
He said there was no escape of any inmates or death recorded.
“The attempted jailbreak, which started at 12:30pm, was initiated by a confrontation between some awaiting trial inmates, especially the recaptured escapees, and convicted inmates,” he said.
He said the development led to a confrontation between them and the convicted inmates.
According to him, a reinforcement was immediately mobilised from the state headquarters to enforce law and order.
He said the situation has been brought under control, adding that investigation into the incident has been instituted to unravel the immediate and remote causes of the disturbance.
