Macron sues for lasting ceasefire in Gaza conflict

French President Emmanuel Macron has reiterated France’s call for an immediate and enduring ceasefire in Gaza, emphasizing the need to alleviate the dire humanitarian situation in the region.

Macron’s appeal came during a telephone conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

In a statement issued by the French presidency, Macron expressed solidarity with the Israeli people following Iran’s recent attack on Israel during the night of April 13-14.

He underscored his opposition to any Israeli offensive on Rafah in southern Gaza, warning that such actions would worsen the already catastrophic situation in Gaza and heighten the risk of escalation.

Macron emphasized the urgent necessity of facilitating a substantial flow of humanitarian aid through all access points to the Gaza Strip. He also stressed France’s commitment to the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages.

Reiterating the French stance on the Middle East conflict, Macron asserted that the two-state solution remains the only viable path towards achieving lasting peace in the region.

On the same day, Macron engaged in a phone call with Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi to discuss the evolving situation in the Middle East.
