Living A Richer Life :J. J. Watt’s Secrets To Success

Published

on

Many (especially sports fans) have heard of “J.J. Watt” in recent years. As a professional football player, he has racked up impressive numbers as arguably one of the best defensive ends in the game today.

For Houston locals watching Number 99 make huge plays can be truly electrifying.

However, what most people may not know about Watt is just how talented he is in other areas of life. The same drive, energy, and passion that makes him so successful on the field has also helped him develop a strong system of success off the field.

Thankfully, anyone, not just professional athletes, can learn and apply the lessons he has used to build a richer, happier life.

What’s J.J.’s secret to happiness?

As it turns out, he follows a simple 2-step process. The steps are short and simple but always easy. Don’t worry, just like football, becoming a great at anything takes practice.

Just by reading this article, just by thinking about how these ideas might apply to you, you’re already starting that practice.

Remember: championships are won in the offseason.

J.J. Watt’s steps to a richer life:

Step 1: Find your own personal dream

Who are you?

No, seriously- who are YOU?

This may sound like a simple question. But before you can create the richer, more successful life you desire, you have to create the vision of that richer life. And finding the right goal, means first learning who YOU are.

There are many things you do everyday without even thinking. If today is like most days, you might expect you’ll go to work, run some errands, eat a few meals, text your friends/family, and hopefully get in a few minutes of TV/smartphone time.

You probably also assume that almost everyone else does the exact same things. Well guess what, everyone is different.

Everyone is different in ways you can’t even imagine.

There are people who literally work every hour that they’re awake, and take no vacation for 18 months straight. Navy seals are real people who go 5 days with 4 hours of sleep just for training. Then, there are people who wake up late and work part-time at a coffee shop.

There are people who spend hours a day sitting in traffic, there are people who walk to work, and there are people who work from home.

The examples above are just for two very basic aspects of life: working and commuting.

Across everything in life, the list of differences between people is truly endless. If you can think of it, someone s probably doing it. And there are lots of different ways that you couldn’t even think of.  All of these different situations are the result of choices made.

Who you are today, the life you live now is a result of choices you have made. Do you like your current situation? Great, keep making great choices.

You probably are already leading a rich life, indeed. Are you not so certain that where you are is where you truly want to be?

Step 2: Make your dream happen in real life

Ok, I’ll Mr. J.J. tell it in his own words. Take it away!

Amazing! In 2 minutes J.J. Watt just explained how to make your richer life a reality – literally, how to make dreams come true. Did you actually watch it? If you did, it’s probably worth watching again.

So what’s J.J.’s advice?

Simple- once you know where you are and where you want to be, find the in-between and start connecting the dots. Once you have the dream, the destination, pull out a map and figure out what lies in between.

And just like someone went out and built lots of roads for you to drive on, there are lots of people who have paved examples for you to follow in chasing your dreams. You just have to find those people and those roads.

J.J. does a really great job of explaining how to find your own path.

He uses what I like to call the “6 How’s”:

How do I get to the NFL? Get drafted

How do I get drafted? Find others who got drafted in the first round.

How did they get drafted? They were big, fast, and strong.

How big? How fast? How strong?

How do I accomplish those numbers? I need to get in the weight room. I need to eat right.

How do I get in the weight room to improve my speed, agility, strength, nutrition.

Find mentors who achieved what you’re trying to achieve (or similar) and break down their paths to success. How did someone get from Point A to Point C? Well, they had to go to Point B. How did they get to Point B? They broke the step down into smaller steps.

Ask yourself, “how do I get to my goals?” Find the steps in between. Find people who have taken those steps and learn how they made it successfully.

You might find that there were aspects to the job that make even better than you could have hoped. You might also find the real-life answer is not quite as perfect as you hoped.

All of that is great! Take your deeper learnings and continue to reshape your goals and path as you go. Everyone is different. There’s no exact recipe out there for you to follow, but every mentor you find can offer you a few new ingredients.

Once you have the path broken down into manageable steps, all you have to do is start walking. Once you start walking, just keep walking. You don’t always have to go super far, super fast. It’s more important to just keep moving.

Keep moving in the same direction, stay motivated and before long, you’ll be surprised at how much progress you’ve made.
