Liverpool versus Nottingham Forest is a derby that lots of fans have forgotten about due to the drastic change of fortunes and status for both clubs. While the Reds are still a European giant, Forest have seen themselves become ‘has beens’ in the hierarchy of European power.

However, when both teams meet, there is still that rivalry underneath that makes things harder for both sides to totally outclass the other.

Liverpool facing off Nottingham Forest has never been an easy win or result even if the Reds have amassed the more points over Forest. In Forest’s first meeting in present times, particularly the 2021/2022 FA Cup season under former manager Jurgen Klopp, the Merseyside Reds had to fight to the neck to steal a 0-1 win away at the City Ground before they could progress into the next round of the competition.

Following Nottingham Forest’s promotion to the premier league, Liverpool were greeted with a 1-0 defeat the next season on same ground they ran home 0-1 winners at in the FA Cup. Ironically, the defeat came courtesy of Liverpool’s former player Taiwo Awoniyi who the Reds sold to Forest.

In the return leg that season, Liverpool needed a late winner to defeat Nottingham Forest in a 3-2 win at Anfield, with yet another ex-Liverpool player Neco Williams netting an equalizer for Forest at 2-2.

Though the Reds eventually got some stable dominance over Forest in the next season, it wasn’t without a fight for Liverpool in a season they almost challenged for the premier league title, had they not fallen when it most mattered.

This season, however it is a different tale; new manager, new tactics, some new faces but same Anfield. What can the world expect from Arne Slot? Can he make it 4 wins from 4 or is Nottingham Forest the derby that Manchester United versus Liverpool failed to be?
