Liverpool vs. Chelsea: A revenge or Wembley subplot?

It is another Chelsea vs. Liverpool final for Jurgen Klopp as manager of the Reds and a second final for Mauricio Pochettino against the Reds.

Liverpool finished their Carabao Cup Semi-final tie versus Fulham in style to set up an inevitable meeting against Chelsea at the famous Wembley stadium.

Trust the Reds to do things in their typical fashion; the hard way as they made a hard work of beating the Cottagers on their ground to set up a Wembley final that seems very reminiscent of the 2021/22 season.

The lone goal in the second leg for Liverpool came via a long ball pass from Centre Back, Jarrell Quansah that was finished off perfectly by Luis Diaz, with Fulham leveling up in the 77th minute thanks to Issa Diop finishing off a cross from former Liverpool midfielder, Harry Wilson for a 2-3 aggregate scoreline.

Chelsea fans will want to forget that final ever happened as the Blues suffered a stressing defeat after playing out 120 plus minutes of football just to lose to Liverpool on penalty kicks. On the Reds’ side Caominh Kelleher played hero for helping his side beat the Blues, while on Chelsea’s side, late substitute, Kepa Arrizabalaga who came on for Edouard Mendy, was the villain after missing his own spot kick against the Merseyside team.

The 2023/24 season’s edition, sets up a rematch for the two teams, with the West-Londoners granted a rare opportunity to humiliate the Reds this time around for what they fancy would be a cold revenge to avenge the 2021/22 team.

It is very much a different side between both teams, and for the Blues, no player who started the 2022 Carabao Cup final will play for Chelsea on the day. A host of players from that team have either departed West-London for other teams or currently sit on the sideline due to an injury.

For Liverpool however, beating the Blues’ neighbors Fulham was the hard job, and if there is going to be any hint of what the final would be, they got a taste of it versus the Cottagers.

Jurgen Klopp and his team will not be going into the game hoping for vengeance but rather the continuation of the subplot of Liverpool beating Chelsea in finals no matter how hard the task may be.

For Mauricio Pochettino, it is a vengeance chronicle for a man who stole victory from him in the Wanda Metropolitano in 2019.

It is either Blue or Red…
