Liverpool plan on awarding 4 players new contracts

The summer transfer window has been something of a divisive one for Merseyside club, Liverpool, especially with the exit of star forward, Sadio Mane.

That said, the club are reported to be looking ahead to the team’s future from now on as they are ready to award some of its players new contract extensions, and one notable name is English centre back, Joe Gomez.

Although the defender has two more years left in his contract, the club feel the need to ward off potential suitors in future.

This could be a problem though for both parties as the centre back is lacking adequate game time after falling behind Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip and Ibrahima Konate in the centre back pairing.

That won’t have been a problem if Trent Alexander Arnold isn’t also ahead of him at Right Back, or Andrew Robertson and Kostas Tsimikas at Left Back.

But that prospect wouldn’t stop the Reds from giving it a try during pre season, as Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp are said to really want the player in the team as he remains a key to Klopp’s plans.

Gomez, 25 is a sort of utility player who can play anywhere across the back 4.

The Red’s sporting director, Julian Ward knows the defender will be frustrated falling behind Joel Matip and Ibrahima Konate in the battle to partner Virgil van Dijk in defence but the club sees the player as one for the future.

Both Van Dijk and Matip will turn 31 soon, this summer with age no longer on their side, even though their performances aren’t slowing down, but Jurgen Klopp will want to groom an eventual successor who is already in the team than go back to the transfer market.

This has caused the club to contemplate not selling Nathaniel Philips on a permanent basis as they consider the defender a potential Joel Matip successor.

With the World Cup coming soon, Gomez is eager to feature in Gareth Southgate’s side as the Londoner harbors ambitions of representing the country in Qatar.

But such ambitions depend on whether he is a regular starter in a team.

After the signings of Darwin Nunez, Fabio Carvalho and Calvin Ramsay, the sporting director will be looking to tie players to longer deals and the names being touted around are Joe Gomez who is the most important, Diogo Jota, Naby Keita and Harvey Eliott.
