Liverpool need to ‘Relax’ — Newcastle star urges
Newcastle United striker Callum Wilson has humorously advised Liverpool to “relax” in the race for securing a spot in the UEFA Champions League next season.
Liverpool, after a disappointing season, are making a late push to finish within the top four and secure European football for the next campaign.
With six consecutive victories under their belt, Jurgen Klopp’s side has reinvigorated their chances, a feat that seemed unlikely just a month ago.
To secure a top-four finish, the Reds must surpass either Manchester United or Newcastle United, both of whom hold crucial advantages with a game in hand over Liverpool. Currently, Liverpool is just one point behind fourth-placed Manchester United and three points adrift of Newcastle.
However, Wilson playfully expressed his discomfort with Liverpool’s proximity, as Newcastle aims to secure a Champions League spot for the first time in over two decades.
During the BBC’s Footballer’s Football Podcast, Wilson jokingly remarked, “Liverpool needs to relax! I said I could smell [a top-four finish] a couple of weeks ago. Now that scent is gone. I don’t know where it’s gone. I can’t find it!”
While Newcastle United has their destiny in their own hands, any misstep in their remaining fixtures could prove costly.
Wilson emphasized the importance of focusing on their upcoming games, acknowledging that Newcastle still has a “long way to go” following their recent 2-0 defeat to Arsenal. He stressed the need to secure three wins out of the remaining four matches before celebrating.
Eddie Howe’s side will face relegation-threatened Leeds United at Elland Road in their next Premier League encounter, scheduled for Saturday. On the other hand, Liverpool will face a crucial must-win match against Leicester City two days later.
As the race for Champions League qualification intensifies, every point becomes crucial in the final stages of the season.
The outcome of the race remains uncertain, but Liverpool’s recent surge and Newcastle’s determination to secure European football promise an exciting finale to the Premier League campaign.
