List of Federal, State and Private Universities in Nigeria As Approved by NUC

Below are the current list of Federal, States and Private Universities in Nigeria as accredited by the Nigerian Universities Commission, alongside the year they were established.

As at today, there are 40 Federal Universities in Nigeria, 44 State Universities in Nigeria and 68 private Universities in Nigeria as approved and released by the Nigeria Universities Commission (NUC), the list is the current and valid one for the year 2017.

According to the National Universities Commission (NUC), Nigeria presently has 40 Federal Universities, 44 State Universities, and 68 Private Universities. Remember that the NUC is the Agency tasked by the Nigerian Federal Government to regulate and act as a catalyst for positive change and innovation for the delivery of quality university education in Nigeria.

The NUC has always warned the general public from time to time to first verify if a university is approved before patronizing them. Irrespective of this, several students have fallen prey to some fraudulent groups parading themselves as approved universities especially foreign ones, only for people to later find out that they are not approved by the NUC.

To save you this hassle, we have taken our time to compile the full list of all approved Universities in Nigeria. We are also committed to updating this list as changes are made within Nigeria’s educational sector. We hope you find this useful.
