After a torrid season with Paris Saint Germain, former Barcelona man, Lionel Messi eventually opens up on his struggles at various points through the season.

The PSG and Argentina superstar reflected on his struggles with the after effects of his Covid infection in January, revealing the difficulties he faced after contracting the virus in an interview with Argentinian broadcast channel TYC Sports on Monday.

“It left me with after effects. It left me with after effects in my lungs. I came back and it was like a month and a half without even being able to run because my lungs were affected,” Messi was translated saying in the interview.

The Argentine forward had to miss a couple of matches after his positive test in January before forcing his way in early; 2 games which were Ligue 1 games and one in the French Cup.

“I came back before I should have, and it got worse because I went too fast and it ended up setting me back. But I couldn’t take it anymore, I wanted to run, to train — I wanted to get going. And in the end, it got worse,” he said.

In the same interview, Messi explains how losing out on the Champions League made the team to feel just when things were starting to turn around, angry that though Real Madrid won their 14th Champions League, they were never the better team in the tournament.

“When I was halfway there [towards being at my peak], the Real Madrid thing happened and that killed us. It killed me and the whole locker room in general and all of Paris because we had this big dream in that competition.” Messi revealed.

The South American will be preparing to play with his national team against Italy in the first edition of the Finalissima, a new competition designed by the football governing bodies of UEFA and CONMEBOL that pits the winners of Euro 2020 against the winners of the Copa Ámerica.

The match takes place on June 1.
