Lionel Messi explains his unique approach to match play
Inter Miami superstar Lionel Messi, known for his unrivaled skills with the ball on his feet and his eight Ballon d’Or titles, has shed light on his distinct approach to playing football, specifically his tendency to walk around the pitch during matches.
Messi, often observed ambling across the field, provided insights into this strategy during an interview with Clank Media. Contrary to what some may perceive as a lack of engagement, Messi’s methodical movement is a calculated tactic.
“When I was at Newell’s, there were two or three times a week we were sent to run around the grounds. I used to hide behind a tree. Running without a ball was never my thing. Heh,” Messi recalled with a smile.
The Argentine legend elaborated on his mindset, emphasizing the importance of observation and analysis over raw physical exertion.
“I have always been very self-critical. I am the first to know what I do right and what I do wrong. When I walk, I analyse the opponent’s positioning, how we stand when we don’t have the ball, get away from the marker and be able to initiate a counterattack.”
Messi’s approach reflects a deep understanding of the game, prioritizing tactical awareness over conventional metrics of performance. “I don’t pay much attention to GPS, statistics or data. I never cared how much I ran in a match,” he admitted.
This philosophy has not only distinguished Messi on the field but also contributed significantly to his sustained success and influence in the sport. His ability to read the game and exploit spaces has made him a formidable force, despite often appearing to be less active than his peers.
