School district officials in Newport News, Virginia are currently on the dismissal of a $40 million lawsuit filed by an elementary school teacher who was shot by her 6-year-old student during class in January.

According to a further report, the school identified as  Deer Park Elementary School had a  young student who  reportedly pulled out a gun from his backpack and accidentally shot his teacher.

The teacher, who sustained injuries to her leg and foot, has since filed a lawsuit against the school district for failing to provide a safe working environment.

However, the school district officials are now seeking to have the lawsuit dismissed, arguing that they are not liable for the incident.

They claim that the teacher was aware of the potential dangers of working in a classroom with young students and that she assumed the risk when she accepted the job.

The lawsuit has sparked a heated debate over the issue of gun control and school safety.

Some are calling for stricter gun laws and increased security measures in schools, while others argue that teachers should be allowed to carry firearms to protect themselves and their students.
