The Lagos State Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development has announced plans to transform Alimosho, a highly populated neighbourhood in Lagos, into a sustainable and functional metropolis.

Mukaila Sanusi, Deputy Director of Public Affairs, revealed this in a statement issued in Lagos on Friday.

According to Sanusi, the Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Dr Oluyinka Olumide, said this at the final stakeholders meeting on the review of the Alimosho Model City Plan, which was held in Lagos on Thursday.

According to Olumide, the plan includes methods such as higher-density housing, low-cost housing options, improved public transit, and designated development priority regions.

He stated that the administration was committed to implementing the strategy and ensuring that diverse agencies collaborated to achieve its objectives.

“Several remarkable efforts in directing the growth pattern of our bourgeoning Logos through plan preparation, execution and implementation have evoked the continuous attention of Government, which now metamorphosed into the preparation of 13 different Master and Model City Plans, 9 Action Area Plans and 9 Development Guide Plans to revitalise the State in both spatial and sectoral aspects.’’

According to the Commissioner, the Lagos State administration reformed the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development to improve Lagos’ development.

This reform, he explained, aims to build a more efficient system for delivering a livable, structured, and sustainable built environment throughout the state.

He expressed his enthusiasm for the work being made in building the state’s urban planning.

The commissioner stated that the swift pace indicated that the Lagos State administration was actively working on developing designs for various areas of the metropolis.

These plans, he stated, should direct future development in a way that benefits residents.

Sanusi also said that a group of consultants presented the revised plan, along with a briefing from a government official.

He mentioned that the plan contained initiatives for better housing options, such as increased densification, regeneration, low-cost housing schemes, and improved public transport.

He stated that 13 distinct zones, including Ipaja, Amikanle, Egbeda, and Igando, will serve as focal points for special planning initiatives.

Sanusi further observed that Mr Oluwole Sotire, Permanent Secretary, Office of Physical Planning and Urban Development, described the Plan’s aim and timeframe.

Sotire stated that the 20-year plan aims to establish methods for transforming the Alimosho Local Government Area into a model city of choice.

He stated that stakeholder involvement was required to make the process participatory and the outcome people-oriented.

“Residents are the beneficiaries of the many advantages of the plan, including the creation of employment and wealth, as well as the creation of an inclusive, equitable, effective, efficient and environment-friendly place to live, work and prosper,” Sotire said.

Lekan Shodeinde, Permanent Secretary, Office of Urban Development, stated that his office will collaborate with the Office of Physical Planning to guarantee rigorous implementation of the plan.

Daisi Oso, General Manager of the Lagos State Planning and Environmental Monitoring Authority (LASPEMA), and Rep. Ganiyu Ayuba, Member of the House of Representatives from the Alimosho Federal Constituency, were among those who attended the occasion.
