Lagos police arrest five at naming ceremony in baby-selling bust

Lagos State Police Command arrested five individuals, including a couple, during a naming ceremony for a two-month-old baby allegedly sold multiple times.

The arrests were made on Friday following a report from the baby’s mother, who informed the police that her child had been taken by a suspect on July 11. The Command’s spokesperson, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the incident in a statement on Saturday.

“The detectives from the Oko-oba Police Division acted swiftly on the report, leading to the arrest of one Gloria. During interrogation, Gloria confessed to selling the baby for ₦500,000 to Pastor Peter,” Hundeyin said.

Pastor Peter, apprehended in Ikene Town, Ogun, admitted to reselling the child for ₦1.4 million to Loretta, who was subsequently arrested in Festac Town, Lagos. Loretta confessed to selling the baby again for ₦2.3 million.

The investigation culminated at the baby’s naming ceremony, where the final buyers, identified simply as Mr. and Mrs. James, were celebrating their new “son.” The police arrested the couple during the ceremony, bringing the total number of suspects to five.

“All suspects will be arraigned in court upon the conclusion of the investigation,” Hundeyin added.

The case highlights the persistent issue of child trafficking in the region, with the police urging the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities.
