Property owners on Lagos-Calabar road to be well compensated — Umahi
The Federal Government via Dave Umahi has announced a compensation package of N2.75 billion for property owners affected by the demolition exercise carried out to facilitate the construction of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway.
Works Minister Dave Umahi revealed this development on May 1st while unveiling the new design routes for the 700-kilometre project in Lagos. He disclosed that the compensation would be disbursed to the first batch of property owners affected by the construction, during a ceremony organized by the Federal Ministry of Works.
The Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway project aims to connect Lagos to Cross River, traversing through several coastal states including Ogun, Ondo, Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, and Akwa Ibom before reaching its terminus in Cross River.
However, controversy has arisen surrounding the project, particularly in light of the demolition of the Landmark Beach Resort, valued at $200 million, to create a right of way for the highway. The project itself is estimated to cost the federal government a staggering N15 trillion.
The compensation announcement comes as a measure to mitigate the impact on property owners affected by the highway’s construction, signaling progress in the government’s efforts to advance infrastructure development in the country.
