Tragedy at the Children’s Hospital
Amid the chaos, parents clutching their children wandered the streets outside the children’s hospital following the airstrikes by Russia on Ukraine, their faces etched with shock and sorrow. Svitlana Kravchenko, a 33-year-old mother, described the terrifying moments as missiles struck.
“It was scary. I couldn’t breathe. I was trying to cover my baby with this cloth so that he could breathe,” she told Reuters.
The hospital, along with a nearby maternity center, suffered extensive damage. Windows were shattered, and structural panels were ripped off, leaving behind a scene of devastation. Hundreds of Kyiv residents mobilized quickly to help clear debris and search for survivors.
Nationwide Impact
The airstrikes were not confined to Kyiv. The Interior Ministry reported significant damage in the central cities of Kryvyi Rih and Dnipro, as well as in two eastern cities. Across these regions, over 100 buildings, including nurseries, a business center, and residential homes, were hit.
President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, en route to a NATO summit in Washington following a stop in Poland, condemned the attacks. Writing on the Telegram messaging app, Zelenskiy highlighted the extensive damage and called for accountability.
“The Russian terrorists must answer for this,” he stated. “Being concerned does not stop terror. Condolences are not a weapon.”
International Outcry
The international community reacted with shock and condemnation. As the images of the destruction spread, world leaders and human rights organizations called for immediate action and support for the Ukrainian people.
A Call for Justice
The devastating attacks have fueled calls for justice and accountability. Zelenskiy’s impassioned plea for action resonated globally, emphasizing that mere words are insufficient in the face of such brutality. “Being concerned does not stop terror. Condolences are not a weapon,” he reiterated, urging for concrete measures to prevent further atrocities.
