Kenya’s military chief, Gen. Francis Ogolla, and nine other military representatives died in a helicopter crash, according to an announcement made by Kenyan President William Ruto during a news conference on Thursday.

President Ruto has declared three days of national mourning to honour the fallen.

The helicopter crashed in the Elgeyo Marakwet district in western Kenya, shortly after taking off from the village of Chesegon.

The cause of the crash remains unclear, and reports indicate that only two out of the 12 individuals on board survived.

Gen. Ogolla, who had assumed office less than a year ago, was among those who tragically lost their lives in the accident.
