Kelechi Iheanacho rescues Nigeria at the death vs. Sierra Leone

In a thrilling encounter in the AFCON qualifiers, Kelechi Iheanacho emerged as the hero for Nigeria, scoring a late winner to secure a hard-fought victory against Sierra Leone.

The Super Eagles had initially taken a commanding lead through Victor Osimhen’s brace, but the Leone Stars fought back, only to be denied by Iheanacho’s decisive strike.

Heading into the match, Nigeria required only a draw to secure qualification for the AFCON 2023.

However, Jose Peseiro’s side had set their sights on maximum points, maintaining a healthy lead for most of the game. It seemed they were on course for victory, but a late lapse in concentration allowed Sierra Leone to equalize.

The first half showcased Osimhen’s exceptional goal-scoring prowess. In the 19th minute, the Napoli ace capitalized on a headed clearance by Kenneth Omeruo and calmly finished over Ibrahim Sesay to give Nigeria the lead. Osimhen doubled his nation’s advantage in the 33rd minute when he skillfully converted a well-placed pass from Joe Aribo in the box.

Just before halftime, Sierra Leone mounted a devastating counter-attack, resulting in Mustapha Bundu pulling a goal back for John Kiester’s side, injecting renewed energy into the match.

After the break, the Super Eagles regained dominance and had several opportunities to extend their lead but failed to capitalize on their chances, paying the price for their wastefulness in front of goal. In the 84th minute, Sierra Leone delivered a stunning blow as Augustus Kargbo unleashed a low shot from the edge of the box, leaving Nigerian goalkeeper Adebayo Adeleye helpless and leveling the score.

With both teams pushing for a winner, it was Nigeria who found the breakthrough. In the dying moments of the game, substitute Kelechi Iheanacho, set up by Zaidu Sanusi, calmly tapped in from close range, sending the Nigerian fans into jubilation.

The Super Eagles’ victory came at the last possible moment, leaving the hosts with little time to mount a comeback. Nigeria, with their qualification for AFCON 2023 already secured, demonstrated their resilience and determination, securing a hard-fought win against a spirited Sierra Leone side.

As Nigeria looks ahead to the upcoming African Cup of Nations, the team will aim to build on this victory and continue their pursuit of glory on the continental stage.
