Keep it going -- Ohanaeze Youth Council to Tinubu

The Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council Worldwide, the apex Igbo socio-cultural organization, has expressed its appreciation to President Bola Tinubu for the removal of Abdulrasheed Bawa as the chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

President Tinubu took decisive action earlier this week by suspending Bawa from office as part of his efforts to restore integrity to public institutions. This move came after the earlier suspension of Godwin Emefiele, the governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

Mazi Okwu Nnabuike, the National President of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council Worldwide, commended President Tinubu for his decision, stating that it was heartwarming. Okwu recalled that his group had previously urged former President Muhammadu Buhari to dismiss Bawa but their advice went unheeded.

The Igbo group had accused Bawa of engaging in corrupt practices within the commission, emphasizing that no previous chairman had faced such intense public scrutiny within such a short period. They also criticized the conduct of other staff members under Bawa’s leadership, suggesting a pervasive problem within the EFCC.

While applauding Tinubu’s action, Okwu emphasized the need for a comprehensive investigation into all of Bawa’s activities during his tenure as EFCC chairman.

According to Okwu, Bawa’s actions were a disappointment to the youth constituency, as he failed to prove that young leaders are capable of holding positions of authority and delivering positive results. Okwu further asserted that Bawa’s conduct had brought disgrace to the EFCC, warranting his name to be remembered unfavorably in history.

The Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council Worldwide urged President Tinubu to continue his ongoing efforts to cleanse the system, calling for the sustained pursuit of accountability for all those involved in hindering the country’s progress, regardless of their positions of influence.

The removal of Abdulrasheed Bawa as EFCC chairman marks a significant development in the administration’s commitment to restoring the integrity of public institutions. As investigations unfold, the public awaits further actions and measures taken to ensure transparency and accountability within the EFCC and other key sectors of governance.
