Kano State government issues heatwave safety advisory
The Kano state government has issued a stern warning, urging residents to adopt precautionary measures to safeguard their health.
Dr. Abubakar Labaran, the Commissioner for Health, expressed deep concern over the relentless heat, emphasizing the need for proactive steps to mitigate its adverse effects.
Labaran highlighted the surge in health complications, including malaria and meningitis cerebrum, attributed to the prolonged heatwave since March.
He underscored the urgency for residents to remain vigilant, especially during the months of March, April, May, and the onset of June, known for their extreme temperatures.
With temperatures soaring between 43 and 45 degrees Celsius, the commissioner cautioned against the potential risks of organ damage and heatstroke, particularly among the elderly and individuals exposed to direct sunlight.
Labaran emphasized the critical importance of staying hydrated and avoiding prolonged exposure to the sun to prevent heat-related illnesses.
In the wake of heightened malaria prevalence due to the heatwave, Labaran urged citizens to prioritize mosquito bite prevention measures, such as sleeping under treated nets and using insecticides.
Additionally, he advised against overcrowding in poorly ventilated spaces to mitigate the risk of meningitis cerebrum transmission.
Residents were urged to remain vigilant and promptly seek medical attention if they experience symptoms of malaria or meningitis cerebrum.
The government reiterated its commitment to providing necessary support and healthcare services to address the health challenges posed by the ongoing heatwave.
As the heatwave persists, the Kano State Government continues to prioritize public health awareness and safety measures to protect the well-being of its residents.
