Kaduna State RANA training

The Kaduna State Universal Basic Education Board (KADSUBEB) has conducted a three-day training for 321 teachers on the Reading and Numeracy Activities (RANA) teaching methodology.

Funded by DFID through UNICEF as part of the Girls Education Program Phase 3 (GEP3), RANA aims to enhance literacy and numeracy instruction in grades one to three in public and Integrated Quranic Schools, with a focus on improving literacy outcomes for learners, especially girls.

Under the Better Education Service Delivery for All (BESDA) program, the training, supported by the World Bank, aims to build teacher capacity to implement the RANA program effectively.

Josephine Michael, Head of Education Management Information System at KADSUBEB, emphasized that the teachers would cascade the training to their colleagues and pupils, using the Hausa language for effective learning.

The Kaduna State Government aims for primary school pupils to identify letters, and sounds, and read simple sentences by primary three, along with basic addition skills.

Michael highlighted the child-centred approach of the RANA program, which integrates play, songs, and actions to enhance learning outcomes.

Participants, including RANA mentors, coaches, and master trainers from the state’s 23 LGAs, shared positive feedback on the impact of the program.

Malam Shehu Bashari from Zaria LGA and Rahab Benjamin from Kaura LGA attested to the effectiveness of the RANA methodology in improving learning outcomes among pupils.

The RANA program, introduced in 2019, has significantly contributed to enhancing children’s learning capacity, paving the way for improved literacy and numeracy skills among primary school learners in Kaduna State.
