Justice Olukayode Ariwoola to swear in 9 Court of Appeal Judges
The Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, is set to administer the oath of office to nine newly appointed Justices of the Court of Appeal on Wednesday.
The highly anticipated event will take place at the main court auditorium of the Supreme Court.
The announcement was made in a statement released on Sunday by Dr. Akande Festus, the Director of Press and Information of the court, who provided details about the incoming justices.
The distinguished jurists poised to take on their new roles are as follows:
- Hannatu Laja-Balogun from Kaduna State, who assumed the position of a High Court Judge on May 24, 1999.
- Binta Zubairu, also from Kaduna State, who was appointed as a High Court Judge on October 31, 2001.
- Peter Chudi Obiora from Anambra State, who took the oath as a High Court Judge on January 17, 2005.
- Okon Efreti Abang from Akwa Ibom State, who has been serving as a High Court Judge since June 22, 2009.
- Asma’u Mainoma from the Federal Capital Territory, who was appointed as a High Court Judge on February 1, 2013.
- Lateef A Ganiyu from Oyo State, who assumed the role of High Court Judge on June 26, 2014.
- Jane Iyang from Cross River State, who took the oath as a High Court Judge on February 12, 2015.
- Hadiza Rabiu Shagari from Sokoto State, who was elevated to the High Court Bench on February 12, 2015.
- Paul Ahmed Bassi from Borno State, who was appointed to the High Court on July 14, 2017.
Additionally, the statement by Dr. Akande Festus highlighted the forthcoming retirement of Justice Amina Augie from the Supreme Court.
Justice Augie, who is set to reach the mandatory retirement age of 70 years on September 21, 2023, will formally conclude her tenure on that date.
Justice Amina Augie, a distinguished jurist, was sworn in as a Justice of the Supreme Court on November 7, 2016. She holds the accolade of graduating with Second Class Upper Division in Law from the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University) in 1977 and being called to the Nigerian Bar in 1978.
The valedictory court session in honor of Justice Augie’s illustrious career was initially postponed due to the annual vacation of the Court, which concluded on Friday, September 15, 2023.
