Jude Bellingham gets banned by UEFA
England international and Real Madrid star, Jude Bellingham sees the law come in strong on him as UEFA makes its final decision following a controversial move against Slovakia in the round of 16. The former Borussia Dortmund star is also joined by Turkiye’s Merih Demiral.
After close reviews, UEFA revealed the disciplinary actions that would follow both Merih Demiral and Jude Bellingham for their controversial celebrations.
England’s midfield sensation, Jude Bellingham, has been handed a one-game ban for his “balls gesture” celebration. However, the suspension is suspended for a year, meaning Bellingham will be available for England’s crucial upcoming match against Switzerland. Alongside the suspended ban, Bellingham has been fined €30,000. If he repeats the offense within the year, he will serve the one-game suspension.

Demiral’s Two-Game Suspension
Turkey’s stalwart defender, Merih Demiral, faces a sterner punishment. UEFA has banned Demiral for two games, rendering him unavailable for the pivotal clash against the Netherlands. Should Turkey advance to the semi-finals, Demiral will also miss that match. The Turkish Football Federation has already lodged an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), seeking to overturn the ban.
Historical Context: Celebrations Leading to Bans
UEFA’s strict stance on player conduct during celebrations isn’t unprecedented. Several high-profile players have faced similar disciplinary actions in the past:
Edinson Cavani (2014): Cavani was handed a two-game ban and fined for his provocative goal celebration in a Serie A match while playing for Napoli. The gesture was deemed offensive by the league authorities.
Nicklas Bendtner (2012): Bendtner received a one-game ban and a hefty fine of €100,000 for revealing sponsored underwear during his goal celebration in the Euro 2012 match against Portugal. UEFA’s regulations on unauthorized commercial content led to the sanction.
Lionel Messi (2017): Messi faced a four-match ban in international play for “directing insulting words” at an assistant referee during a World Cup qualifier. Though not a celebration, it highlights the governing bodies’ intolerance towards inappropriate on-field conduct.
