Jonathan reminds Nigerians of “Freedom Enjoyed” during his tenure

Nigeria’s former president Goodluck Ebele Jonathan shared a throwback of a speech he gave in December 2014 saying he was the most insulted president in the world.

The post, which so far has over 2500 comments, is a photo of a quote from the speech. The quote reads:

I am the most abused and insulted president in the world, but when I leave you will all remember me for the total freedom you enjoyed under my Government.

His post is seen as a subliminal targeted toward the present government’s insistence on curtailing what it has termed “hate speech.”

The Vice President Yemi Osinbajo had in a series of tweets last week said the government is taking a stand against hate speech.

He said hate speech is a type of terrorism, as stated in the Terrorism Prevention Act 2011.

The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) had also in the same week announced its planned censoring of broadcast stations.

It stated broadcast stations are not allowed to discuss ongoing court cases in the country.

It also said broadcast stations are to begin screening callers before airing them, to ensure there is no hate speech.

Director of Defence Information, Maj. Gen. John Enenche, in an interview with Channels TV, also disclosed that the military now monitors social media to sieve out and react to anti-government, anti-military, and anti-security speeches.
